Sunday Scribble

From June 19th:

Megan Buschau gave a wonderful lesson about the blessings of being obedient.  We talked about the difference between being compelled to be obedient and doing so because it's the right thing to do.  One thing someone said that struck a chord with me was this: "We may not always see a negative consequence for spiritual disobedience.   But, we keep Heavenly Father from bestowing blessings on us, and the spirit gradually recedes, until we are in serious spiritual danger."

She went on, "Sometimes we rationalize that the Lord will understand if we choose not to keep a commandment 'just this once' - because we have a special circumstance.  He expects us to keep all of the commandments, and then He provides a way for us to accomplish it."

D&C 58:26-29 says: "For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore, he receiveth no reward.  Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness.  For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves.  And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.  But he that doeth not anything until he is commanded, and receiveth a commandment with doubtful heart, and keepeth it in slothfulness, the same is damned."

And then Megan compelled us to participate by giving us candy.
