Seventy-Two Hour Kits

As the busy months of summer approach there is no better time to get your 72 hour kits prepared and ready!  Sister Carla Kanokoa has found links to some valuable resources to help us out!  Don't delay! Prepare now!

This is a great blog for emergency preparedness: www.preparedldsfamily.blogspot.com. For those who attended the R.S. activity last Thursday, this is the 12 steps for preparing a 72 hr. kit. For those who weren’t there and want to get a kit prepared for your family, a great step by step resource.

Here is a list of items to include in the kit from FEMA.

Chemo Care Kit for Kids

We announced on Sunday an upcoming Relief Society Quarterly Activity on June 2nd. We will share all the details on Sunday! One part of the activity will be collecting and creating Chemo care kits for kids. I've attached the document that explains the type of items we need donated. We will have a collection box on Sunday and for the next few weeks. Thank you for your continued support!

 TIPS
 For each kit include: five Items to Help with Side Effects plus one activity and/or comfort item.
 Buy travel-sized items.
 Plan to budget approximately $1 for each item. The comfort and activity items seem to range in price from $3-$5. Most kits put together cost: $8-$12.
 Focus each kit for a specific group (age range and gender: boy, girl, or either)
 Make sure all the items in each kit are age appropriate for the same age range. (For example: cozy size 1 Spiderman slippers would be a mix-match with nail care kit.)

Items to Help with Side Effects (include 5 or more of the following)
Tissues
Mints
Lemon drops or Lemonheads
Gum
Ring pops
Fragrance-free lotion
Two sets of plastic utensils (highly recommended—Best ones from IKEA)
Hand sanitizer (for family members to use)
Lip balm
Antibacterial hand wipes

Comfort Items (include 1 of the following)
Soft socks, slippers, or hat
Washable, cuddly item
Blanket or pillow case

Activity Items (include 1 of the following)
Coloring book and crayons or colored pencils
Simple craft
Small toys
Nail care kit (for teenage girls)
Fun, twisty straws
Activity or joke book
Stickers and notebook
Travel-sized games, card games, or puzzles
Notepad and color pens
Gift cards (Red Box, iTunes)

Chemo Care Kits for Kids will help with managing side effects from chemotherapy and in providing needed distractions for kids and their families during this stressful time. These items have been “Mom approved” by REAL moms that are currently helping their children conquer cancer.

It was a bit difficult to compare the 2 sources I spot checked (Walmart vs. Costco) because they have different sizes, or price per serving rather than ounce.  However, it was interesting to see the different things available.  These are local stores, and some of the products are on the shelf. I think the larger size items are online mail order from both.  The 72 hour kits are pretty inclusive, and reasonable, in my opinion.

The Walmart site has some specialty things that are probably more realistic for food storage, other than in true natural disaster emergencies scenarios.  Things like biscuit and bread mix, etc.  That is probably a good source to get things to add to food storage outside of the 'stave off starvation' items you'd normally have and want on hand.

Kathee Nelson
Kathee Nelson did a comparison of food storage items found in our local area which you will find under the Provident Living tab.  Sorry it took so long to get this to you all.  I'm finding the most difficult part is figuring out how to post the food storage information.  Carla
